We know that making the transition from primary to secondary education can be a challenging time for students and parents and that the first year of secondary school is an important time. We provide an extensive, individualised transition programme, which allows students to settle into Denbigh School quickly and be ready to learn, as well as giving parents the information they need to feel confident about their children starting secondary school. This whole process is built on the close links we have formed over the years with our feeder primary schools.

We hold a New Intake Parents Evening giving parents all the information they need and a chance to meet key members of staff.

We have a dedicated transition mailbox and parents are encouraged to use that to contact us with any questions they may have. We also visit all of our feeder schools to meet with our new Year 7 students and give them a welcome pack, tell them a little about Denbigh School and answer any questions they may have. The welcome packs include a welcome letter, student information booklet, transition activity booklet and a reading book. The students are encouraged to read that book over the summer holidays and all lessons during the first week of term for Year 7 students are focused on it. This is an excellent way of ensuring that all our students have something in common when they start with us and gently introduces them to a secondary school curriculum.

We also run Summer Schools in the holidays with the aim of enabling students to become more familiar with the building and facilities, get to know each other and complete some activities focused on literacy, numeracy and wellbeing.

We aim to do everything we can to help our new students to settle quickly and to reassure and inform parents. As part of the transition process we produce a student information booklet. This is the version that was given to the Year 7 students who joinied us in September 2023.
