Awards Ceremony celebrates Sporting Talent & Commitment
We held a fantastic Sports Awards Ceremony last week. 160 awards were given out including Full and Half Colours for students who have demonstrated the highest levels of talent and commitment when representing our sports teams. Also given out on the night were PE Curriculum Awards, ‘Players Player of the Year’ awards, and awards from our successful Football Academy. We also celebrated students who have achieved national or regional recognition in their sporting fields and all members of our sports teams.
During the evening, we were treated to a fencing demonstration from Mr Berriman who runs our fencing club, along with Matthew McKenna from Year 11. We also raised awareness on the night of the 4Ed Campaign set up by Gloucester Rugby to raise funds to support Ed Slater, their player, and our former student in his battle with Motor Neurone Disease.
Ed joined Denbigh in 2000 and was a talented rugby player even then, representing the school and Milton Keynes Rugby Club. After leaving Denbigh, Ed moved to Australia to develop his skills and played for club sides there. In 2010, Ed signed for Leicester Tigers and played for them for seven years, winning the Premiership title in 2013. Ed also represented England during this time. In 2017, Ed signed for Gloucester Rugby who he represented until he retired from professional rugby following his MND diagnosis in July 2022.
