Human Rights and Responsibilities Conference hosted for MK students

Never forgetting the lessons of the Holocaust and other genocides that have taken place across the world was the theme of a Human Rights and Responsibilities Conference we hosted in association with the Holocaust Educational Trust and Remembering Srebrenica, for students from schools across Milton Keynes. 

The students heard from speakers including Safet Vukalic BEM, a Bosnian survivor of Srebrenica, Ben Everitt MP, Paul Salver an Outreach Educator for the Holocaust Educational Trust, Sarah Clarke the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire and the Mayor and Mayoress of MK.  They talked about the importance of Human Rights and the danger of them being disregarded and abused when genocides take place.  Our Sixth Form Student Holocaust Ambassadors spoke about their experience of being Ambassadors for the Holocaust Educational Trust, a role which has involved them visiting Auschwitz.

As the Conference drew to a close, the audience were given the chance to decorate the Tree of Kindness with reflections of what they had heard during the Conference or a message of kindness.  The Tree will be displayed in-school as inspiration for the whole learning community.

Dr Frame said: ‘We are proud to have hosted this Conference for the young people of Milton Keynes.  We are grateful to all the speakers who delivered such powerful and hopeful messages to the students.  We were delighted that our Sixth Formers who are Student Ambassadors for the Holocaust Educational Trust were able to share what they have learnt in their ambassadorial roles, including their poignant visit to Auschwitz.’

Paul Salver from the Holocaust Educational Trust who was master of ceremonies at the Conference said: ‘This event helps our efforts to create a bridge of understanding, care and empathy and to bring together all social, cultural and racial groups to stand against racism and intolerance through knowledge and understanding of the Holocaust and other genocides’.
