Two memorable performances of Saba’s Swim

Our talented Creative Arts students treated in-school audiences to two memorable performances of Saba’s Swim as part of the National Theatre, Connections 2025, Youth Theatre Festival.  With a different cast performing each night and a diligent crew running each show, the production showcased the incredible depth of talent within our Creative Arts Faculty.

Whilst directed by Mrs Brunings, when it came to production week, the production reigns were handed over to our wonderful students.  Not only did they take centre stage as the cast, but they managed every aspect behind the scenes. From lighting and sound design to stage crew, stage management and assistant directing; our students demonstrated outstanding creativity, leadership, and professionalism in bringing this production to life.

This was a truly memorable experience for all involved.  Not only did everyone gain a deeper insight into the world of professional theatre, but they developed and honed valuable life skills over the three-month rehearsal period.  They expanded social circles, showed empathy and encouragement when challenges arose, and displayed tremendous resilience throughout the entire process.  We are so proud of them all!

Our next production of Saba’s Swim will be on the professional stage, at the Royal & Derngate Theatre in Northampton on Saturday, 5 April and tickets can be purchased here:  NT Connections Festival – Saba’s Swim – Denbigh School | Royal & Derngate

We are delighted to be taking part in the National Theatre’s Connections Youth Theatre Festival for the first time as it has given our talented cast and crew a chance to explore the world and shine.  We have received fantastic reviews of the productions including:

Alice Chambers from The National Theatre

‘I really enjoyed coming to Denbigh and watching such a brilliant performance; I sat next to a young person’s family member who was praising how much their child loved working on the show. This is what the Connections Festival is all about – young people coming together, growing in confidence and seeing themselves in these stories. Congratulations!’

Anna Simpson from the Royal & Derngate Theatre

‘I thought it was an accomplished production – simple but effective staging with some striking stage pictures achieved.  I very much liked the pre-show interviews around the themes.  What most impressed me most was the cast – their energy, pacing, attack and commitment to each and every moment was evident.  Congratulations to the whole cast and crew and we look forward to hosting you all at the Royal & Derngate Theatre’.

Mr Stewart, Deputy Headteacher

‘The Production of Saba’s Swim was fantastic and the hard work and talent of everyone involved really shone through. I have no doubt that your performance at the Royal & Derngate on April 5th will be a great success!’

Mr Gannaway, Director of Post 16

‘Congratulations to the cast and crew for an amazing performance last night.  I really enjoyed it and thought the actors were all superb – conveying the emotions and the message to the audience maturely, with a mix of humour and teenage angst.  A massive well done to everyone involved.’

Annabella Hartslief, Student Chair of School Council.

‘The Production was inspirational to watch.  It was so well organised, and the acting was incredible. I know it must have taken a lot of dedication and effort to create something so flawless.  I was blown away!  I hope that bringing it together was as much fun as watching it.’
