Denbigh wins Sustainability Prize at MK STEM Awards

It was a night of celebration for Denbigh at the MK STEM Awards as we won the Sustainability Prize for our Eco-Textile Dye Garden Club run by Design Technology teacher, Mrs Davies-Fairclough.  The Award was presented to Mrs Davies-Fairclough at a Ceremony held at Le Tour Hotel in MK.  As well as taking home this prestigious award, we were also finalists in the ‘Education Excellence’ and ‘Tomorrow’s Leader’ categories.  We were finalists in the ‘Education Excellence’ Category for our commitment to STEM as a whole school community and Year 13 student, Pomaa Stewart, was a finalist in the ‘Tomorrow’s Leader’ Award for the leadership she showed in the Engineering Education Scheme, when she helped her team bring together their ideas and develop their project.

We are delighted that the judges recognised the innovative nature of our Eco-Textile Dye Garden Club and the commitment to sustainability shown by Mrs Davies-Fairclough and the students in this popular after-school club.  Every week the students’ plant, nurture and harvest plants and vegetables to produce natural dyes for fabrics to use in DT projects.  There is no waste created as the produce is also used to rustle up delicious food, helping to develop our students’ cooking skills.  The Club uses food waste from cooking lessons to make compost and saves onion skins to produce fabric dye.  Our in-house caterers Cucina have joined in as well, saving their bio waste for us.  The Club currently involves Year 7 & 8 students, but we are looking to open this up to the whole school going forward.

Mr Steed, Headteacher said ‘It was a fantastic evening for all involved and we are proud that Denbigh’s commitment to STEM and Sustainability has been recognised and celebrated across the City.’
