We know that making the transition from primary to secondary education can be a challenging time for students and parents and that the first year of secondary school is an important time. We provide an extensive, individualised transition programme, which allows students to settle into Denbigh School quickly and be ready to learn, as well as giving parents the information they need to feel confident about their children starting secondary school. This whole process is built on the close links we have formed over the years with our feeder primary schools.
Before the Pandemic, we held an induction day for new students in July where they could explore the school and meet their tutor and fellow students. We also held a New Intake Parents Evening giving parents all the information they needed and a chance to meet staff.
We have had to adapt this programme because of the Pandemic, but we are confident that what we were able to put in place still gave students the opportunity to make a successful start at Denbigh. This included a recorded presentation for parents, published on a dedicated page of our website along with other useful transition information. We created a transition2021 mailbox and parents were encouraged to use that to contact us with any questions they had. We also visited all 30 of our feeder schools to meet with our new Year 7 students and give them a welcome pack, tell them a little about Denbigh School and answer any questions they may have. The welcome packs included a welcome letter, student information booklet, transition activity booklet and copy of a book The Boy at the Back of the Class. The students were encouraged to read the book over the summer holidays and all lessons during the first week of term for Year 7 students focused on it. This proved to be an excellent way of ensuring that all our students had something in common when they started with us and gently introduced them to a secondary school curriculum.
We also ran two five-day Summer Schools in the summer holidays hosted by Denbigh School staff and the Specialist Company – ‘Let me Play’. The aim of the Summer School was to enable students to become more familiar with the building and facilities, get to know each other and complete some activities focused on literacy, numeracy and wellbeing.
We will be finalising our plans for the 2022 Year 7 transition process soon taking into account any Covid restrictions, but whichever form the process takes we will do everything we can to help our new students to settle quickly and to reassure and inform parents.
