Five Star Review for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Our Production of Charlie and the Chocolate – our first full scale musical for seven years has been a triumph and received a five star review!

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – Denbigh SchoolA Truly Golden Ticket Production!

WOW! From the moment the show started, it was clear that this was a production built on passion, teamwork and an enormous amount of talent. Every member of the company embraced the imaginative, larger than life world of Roald Dahl with confidence, creating an evening full of laughter, warmth and genuine theatrical magic.

Leading the company was Ugochi as Willy Wonka. Rather than attempting to imitate previous portrayals, Ugochi created a wonderfully individual Wonka, mischievous, mysterious and quietly eccentric. Her performance balanced humour guiding both the characters and audience through the factory with effortless charisma. Vocally assured and commanding throughout, Ugochi held the stage with remarkable confidence.

Opposite Wonka, Alex delivered an endearing and heartfelt Charlie Bucket. Charlie’s kindness and optimism can easily become sentimental, but Alex’s natural sincerity made every moment believable. His relationship with Grandpa Joe provided some of the production’s most touching scenes.

Aaradhana brought warmth, humour and infectious enthusiasm to Grandpa Joe, creating a believable and affectionate partnership with Charlie. Their chemistry was one of the emotional anchors of the production.

The four golden ticket winners were wonderfully contrasted. Benjamin fully embraced Augustus Gloop’s comic gluttony, while Elodie gave Veruca Salt exactly the right amount of entitled arrogance without ever becoming one dimensional. Libby attacked Violet Beauregarde with boundless energy and confidence, and Oliver was thoroughly entertaining as the television-obsessed Mike Teavee. Each performer understood the heightened style required and committed wholeheartedly to their characters. I absolutely loved the musical numbers that introduced each character!

Their parents provided equally entertaining support. Sophie, Elliott, Rio and Sienna all created memorable comic performances, each bringing distinctive personalities to their roles while complementing their on stage children perfectly. One of my favourite parts of the show was when each character was introduced after winning a golden ticket! Very entertaining and brilliantly performed.

The Bucket family scenes possessed genuine warmth thanks to Anya as Mrs Bucket (who sang her songs beautifully), alongside Evie, Lennon and Ashviga as Charlie’s grandparents. These quieter moments allowed the audience to connect emotionally before the spectacular chaos of the factory unfolded. They also added lots of humour and laugh out loud moments to the show!

The supporting cast deserves enormous praise. Amelia, Shruthiha and Shashaank ensured that even the smaller roles felt fully realised, whilst every member of the ensemble brought energy, precision and enthusiasm to every scene.

An outstanding ensemble is often the heartbeat of a musical, and this company demonstrated exactly why. Ariel, Emily, Faith, Ily, Maahika, Maddie, Muadh, Peter, Sahaana, Sara and Soraia threw themselves wholeheartedly into every number.

The Dance Specialists were exceptional. Alexa, Antonina, Chloe, Erin, Faith, Julia, Karina, Lyra, Millie, Willow, and Xavery were all fabulous! The ‘BAD NUT’ scene was one of my favourites!

Whether creating the bustling streets around Charlie’s home, bringing Wonka’s magical factory to life or supporting the principal cast through slick choreography and vibrant vocals, they maintained exceptional energy and commitment throughout. Every member of the ensemble remained fully engaged, creating believable characters and contributing to the rich theatrical world on stage. Their enthusiasm, professionalism and teamwork were evident in every scene, proving that there are no “small roles” in musical theatre, only performers who make every moment count.

The choreography, created by Mrs Lewis, was ambitious, varied and polished, and every dancer executed it with confidence and commitment. The production maintained its pace through slick scene changes and energetic musical numbers that never lost momentum. The set was outstanding! The time and effort that must have been spent creating such a wonderful set was worth it! There were plenty of WOW moments, especially when the stage was transformed into Willy Wonka’s factory!

Musically, the show was in very safe hands. Under the direction of Mr Stroud, the live orchestra delivered a polished and vibrant accompaniment throughout. Yes, LIVE orchestra! A highlight for me was the music and the orchestra did not miss a beat! They were exceptional, adding a professional quality that elevated the entire performance. The cast were equally well supported vocally, with clear evidence of excellent preparation from vocal coach Mrs Clegg.

Behind every successful production is an army of people who often remain unseen, and this performance was no exception. Director Mrs Brunings should be incredibly proud of what has been achieved. The production was thoughtfully paced, visually engaging and allowed every performer the opportunity to shine. The technical team, led by Mr Wilkie and supported by the production, lighting, sound, stage and prop crews, ensured the show ran seamlessly.

What impressed me most was the evident sense of community throughout the company. Productions like this are never about individual stars alone, they succeed because every performer, musician, technician, designer, crew member and member of staff contributes towards a shared vision. That collaborative spirit shone through in every scene.

As someone fortunate enough to review professional theatre regularly, I genuinely found myself forgetting I was watching a school production. The commitment, joy and confidence displayed by every student created an evening that entertained from beginning to end.

Roald Dahl reminds us that “a little magic can take you a long way,” and Denbigh School certainly created something magical. This was a production filled with imagination, heart and outstanding teamwork, showcasing not only the remarkable talent within the school but also the dedication of the staff who nurture it.

Congratulations to everyone involved, you should all be immensely proud. This was a truly golden ticket of a production. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
